 ABUFreak - das bin ich!

Mein Name ist Derrik Figge, geboren 1974 in Bonn und seitdem auch fest mit dieser Stadt und ihrer Umgebung verbunden, auch wenn ich heute aktuell nicht mehr direkt in Bonn wohne. Die Liebe und die Nähe zu meinem Hausgewässer haben mich ins Vorgebirge zwischen Köln und Bonn verschlagen.

Ich habe bereits mit 6 Jahren das erste Mal eine Angel in der Hand gehabt, und dieses Hobby hat mich seither nicht mehr losgelassen.   

Ich fische überall und auf alles, was Schuppen hat. Genauer läßt es sich nicht eingrenzen, denn kein Fisch ist vor mir sicher, solange es möglich ist, ihn mit einer Rute und einem Haken zu fangen.

Zu meinen bevorzugten Revieren gehören meine Stammgewässer rund um Köln/Bonn sowie die Ahr bei Dernau zum Fliegenfischen und die deutsche Ostsee, wo ich seit einigen Jahren mit meinem Freund Andreas überaus erfolgreich den Meerforellen nachstelle.

Darüber hinaus hat mich vor allem die Fischerei in den USA und Australien fasziniert, da es dort zum guten Ton gehört, catch & release zu betreiben und die Fischbestände entsprechend gesund sind.   

Zu Beginn meiner Sammelei gab es nur sehr wenige Möglichkeiten, an alte ABU Rollen zu kommen. Sicher konnte man den wenigen Sammlern in Deutschland die eine oder andere doppelte Rolle abjagen, aber viel kam dabei nicht rum. Vor allem waren die Stücke dann meist weder selten noch sehr gut erhalten.

Die große Wende brachte für mich die Erfindung des Internets:

Ich habe zu Beginn mit einem 386er erste Erfahrungen im world wide web gemacht und mich über 3 Minuten für den Seitenaufbau und damit jeder Menge verpasster Chancen beim Bieten in letzter Minute "freuen" dürfen. Allerdings hatte diese neue Plattform einen entscheidenden Vorteil. Der Großteil der Sammler war damals deutlich älter als ich und wollte mit diesem "neumodernen Quatsch" nichts am Hut haben.

Die ersten Jahre konnte ich also in Seelenruhe und allein auf weiter Flur meine Sammlung aufbauen und der Name ABUFreak sorgte in Sammlerkreisen weltweit für Aufsehen. Viele interessante Stücke meiner Sammlung stammen aus dieser Zeit. Aus heutiger Sicht ein wahres Schlaraffenland mit schier unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten, an Dinge zu kommen, von deren Existenz man bis dato nicht einmal geträumt hatte. Ich erinnere mich gerne daran zurück, denn ich habe in den ersten Jahren (Ebay war da noch nicht gegründet, Alando und andere Onlineauktionshäuser in Deutschland waren das einzige, was es gab) quasi das ABU Monopol in Deutschland gehabt. 

Jeder, der ABU ernsthaft sammelte, stolperte in den folgenden Jahren zwangsläufig irgendwann über das Internet und nach der Firmengründung von Ebay und der damit verbundenen Werbeflut ging es dann Schlag auf Schlag. Jeder bekannte Sammler weltweit fand sich dort wieder, und viele wunderten sich, wer denn dieser komische Typ namens ABUFreak war und warum er, im Gegensatz zu einem selbst, schon soviele Kauf-Bewertungen hatte...

Tja, was soll ich sagen? Es gibt einen schönen Spruch, der es auf den Punkt bringt: Der frühe Vogel fängt den Wurm! 

Heutzutage ist Ebay der einfachste und schnellste Weg, an neue Stücke für seine Sammlung zu kommen, mit Sammeln im eigentlichen Sinne hat das allerdings m.E. nichts mehr zu tun. Hier zählt nur noch: Wer ist bereit, den Höchstpreis einzutippen.

Ich muss aber zugeben, dass es außerhalb Schwedens ohne das Internet unmöglich ist, eine umfangreiche Sammlung  in halbwegs anständigem Zustand zusammenzubekommen. Gerade seltene Rollen tauchen bei Ebay mit einer gewissen Regelmäßigkeit auf, und man kann abwägen, ob sie einem das Geld wert sind.

Ich selbst bin in den letzten Jahren, aufgrund der immer stärker wachsenden internationalen Konkurrenz und den immer häufiger werdenden Problemen mit unseriösen Verkäufern bei Ebay, kürzer getreten.

Ich freue mich mehr über neue Informationen, als dass ich noch fehlenden Modellen zum Höchstpreis hinterher jage. Alles taucht irgendwann auf, man muss nur genug Geduld haben.

In den letzten Jahren habe ich zusammen mit anderen ABU verrückten Sammlern an diversen Büchern gearbeitet, welche ich Euch unter dem Punkt "Sammlung & Seltenes" auch gerne zeigen möchte.

My name is Derrik Figge and I was born in 1974 in a town called Bonn the ex capitol of Germany (1949-90) located directly on the well known river Rhine. I love this town and the area around it called the Rhineland. Actually I don’t live in the city of Bonn anymore but very close to it. I moved a bit closer to my most favourite fishing waters located between Cologne and Bonn.

When I was 6 years old, a neighbour took me out on my first fishing trip for eel and a new hobby took place in my life. Since than I am addicted to fishing and fish whenever and where ever I can. I am not specialized in any fishing technique, I love and practice all of them. If a fish can be caught with a fishing rod, I try it and mostly I am successful ;-)

My most favourite fishing waters are the lakes nearby Bonn and Cologne, the fly stream Ahr which is nearby Bonn and the Baltic Sea where I fish for sea trout with my very good friend Andreas, a well known collector for old pre WW II German fishing tackle.

I travel a lot all over the world and where ever I am, I try to find time to go fishing. Most of all I like fishing in the USA and Australia as catch and release is allowed. In Germany it is forbidden by law – in my opinion a stupid decision – as they don’t want any creature to be harmed. But if you don’t want to eat the fish you caught, you have to throw it away. This doesn't make sense at all, so even though catch and release is illegal, it is also common here.

My career as an ABU fishing tackle collector began when I was 14 years old. Bernd, a well known German ABU collector, showed me his latest finds and his collection of old fishing tackle. At that time Bernd worked in a fishing tackle store in Bonn and we soon became good friends. Several years ago the old shop was closed by the former owner and Bernd bought it. I helped him to reopen it and his shop became the best in town (link).

In the beginning I was still at school and my financial situation was not the best. Two years later, at age of 16, I started my career at a well-known German bank and since than my collection began to grow…

In the early days I had only very few possibilities to acquire new pieces for my collection. In Germany ABU fishing reels were very expensive so not too many people owned them and even less collected them. This made it very difficult to find new things for my collection. For several years I could only buy very few reels mostly collector's doubles and their quality was not too good at all.

The big turning point for me was the invention of the internet:

As soon as I heared from my friends that the internet, so fas an unknown space for me, would be the place to find “what ever you want, where ever you want”, I bought myself a computer. My first pc and its cable connection were so slow that loading a single website took nearly 3 minutes! I had to learn how to use it and after a few weeks I began my hunt for treasures in the world wide web.

Auction platforms all over the world were already online and I registered myself on all of them. I had to teach myself several languages to understand the different user agreements and descriptions in the adverts. Online translation programs didn’t exist in the early days so I had to do this with a dozen dictionaries word by word. Till that day I only spoke school English and for sure, not even very good ;-) 

As auction sniper programs were not invented yet, I had to bid by hand within the last seconds. My girlfriend soon began to hate my hobby as I bought most of my items in foreign countries and so it was more or less normal for me to get up at 3 or 4 a.m. to place my bids with shivering and sweating hands and go back to bed smiling. I didn’t find much sleep but it was worth it!

At that time most of the other fishing tackle collectors were much older and so none of them knew about the new medium internet or wanted to use it. German collectors still used telephones to buy things from other collectors in Germany. But outside of Germany the internet was well known and most people used it to sell their goods.

It was the best time I ever had, buying items no one had ever seen or heared about and getting them for small money. I was the only German being active on the internet and you can say, I had the ABU monopol in Germany.

Using the internet made it fast and easy to buy items all over the world so it happened for sure a hundred times that collectors heared the rumours: “This German guy ABUFreak already bought it, sorry”.

But over the years more and more people found out about the internet. Mostly their children tought them how to use it and they were impressed by the amount of nice new items being available each day. At the European tackle fair in Eindhoven/Netherlands people asked me “Excuse me, are you the ABUFreak?” and “Why do you have so many feedbacks on Ebay already, I just found their website!”. This was always very funny.

Most of the nicest items in my collection are from that time and most of them would be impossible to buy today as times have changed a lot. Nowadays Ebay is probably the best place to find new items and all you need to get them is place in the highest bid. This has nothing to do with collecting, so I enjoy thinking about the old times when it all began...

But to be true, outside of Sweden it would be nearly impossible to build up a good collection of ABU reels without the internet. Even rare items show up on Ebay once in a while and you can decide if they are worth it.

I decided a few years ago to stop buying too much on Ebay as prices exploded and crooks showed up on Ebay selling fakes or damaged items. Today I enjoy receiving new infos on the history of ABU more than hunting for treasures at high level prices. My motto: Everything shows up from time to time, you only have to be patient.

Over the past few years I worked together with a few of the most well-known collectors for ABU tackle and helped them publish several books on ABU fishing reels. I have displayed these books under “Sammlung & Seltenes” on this website.
